Science
Intent
Science at Wellington and Marlborough aims to provide children the opportunity to investigate their wide world, ensuring that they are building a curiosity about the subject and giving them the confidence to ask 'why'. We support children to develop a core foundation of scientific knowledge which will enable them to have the confidence and correct language to form predictions, plan investigations and explain and critically analyse their findings showing an understating of cause and effect.
After ensuring children have a basic understanding of necessary scientific concepts, we use a problem solving approach and, where appropriate, teachers put investigations into a relevant context - whether that may be linked to their topic or the children’s lives.
Our aim as a school is to create children who are independently able to plan and carry out fair and well-designed investigations to test given problems with a critical eye and support them to assess their own and others’ results. This is achieved via teacher modelling, guided experiments and group work; giving the child a sense of independence and ownership of their learning.
